Site Languages

A site can exist in several languages at once. There is one rule underneath all of it, and it explains most of the questions people have.

The Main Language

Every site has one main language — the one it was created in. Pages are written in it, and every other language is a translation of them. That is why:

  • a new page can only be created in the main language. To have it in French, create it in the main language and translate it;
  • the main language cannot be removed — that would not be removing a translation, that would be deleting the site's content;
  • the main language cannot be swapped while translations exist. Remove the other languages first, then change it.

The reason is simple. A page that exists only in French has no original. The language switcher would be offering a translation of something that is not a translation, and re-translating the site would never reach it.

Adding a Language

On the Pages screen open the language list and press Add a language. Pick it, and the AI translates every page into it. The cost is shown before anything starts.

Translations Arrive as Drafts

A fresh translation is never published automatically. It lands as a draft so that you can read it first. Right after a run you will see something like “10 pages, 0 published” — that is normal, not a failure. Publish them once you are happy.

When the Original Changes

Edit an original page and its translations are marked Out of date. Press Update on one and it is translated again from the new original. If you had edited that translation by hand, you are asked whether to overwrite your version or keep it.

Removing a Language

A language is added in one action and comes off in one: removing it deletes every page written in it. The number of pages is shown before you confirm.
